Lead Finance in the Arts

Company Background

As one of Australia’s oldest Arts institutions, our client is universally loved both locally and on the world stage. Philanthropic activity and continued government support has allowed them to thrive and continually grow.

This is a great opportunity for an experienced Financial Controller to join a renowned organisation on a 6-month fixed-term contract to cover parental leave.

In addition to a creative, welcoming and upbeat culture, you are also able to work from home 2 days each week once you have understood your role.

The Role

In this Financial Controller position, you will report to a supportive and talented CFO/COO.

This position will see you head up the day-to-day finance team with four direct reports and will include, but not be limited to the following responsibilities:

  • Prepare accurate monthly management accounts, quarterly Board and funder reports, variance analysis and monthly KPIs.
  • Support departments with budget-setting, management and reporting; assist with the annual company budget.
  • Prepare annual financial statements and year-end audit packs; coordinate and support external audit fieldwork.
  • Maintain fixed asset register and run depreciation calculations; reconcile prepaid ticketing income.
  • Oversee reconciliation of balance sheet accounts (clearing, contra, accruals, prepayments).
  • Prepare and maintain monthly cashflow and balance reports; review and approve monthly bank reconciliations.
  • Administer banking arrangements with external institutions.
  • Prepare compliance reporting to government and external bodies (e.g., ATO BAS/FBT).
  • Lead ongoing process review and improvement; create and maintain ledger structure and accounting software.
  • Upload annual budgets and forecasts to the accounting system; oversee accounts payable and receivable.
  • Lead, mentor and develop members of the Finance Team.

Your Background

To be considered for this role, first and foremost, you will need a love for the Arts and learning! It’s a creative industry, and you will need to be comfortable working with a range of stakeholders and personalities. On the skills side, you will need to have:

  • Led a Finance team through a time of great change and realignment.
  • Ideally worked in an externally funded environment such as NFP or the Arts.
  • Professionally qualified as an Accountant (e.g. CA / CPA or similar).
  • A real get-up-and-go personality that loves to business partner.
