The positives of a temporary addition to your team

Whether you are preparing for year-end or starting a new project, it’s important that you have the right resources on hand to deliver. There are a number of resourcing options available – you can hire a new team member or ask your existing finance team to take on more work. Alternatively, to save your sanity and keep your employees happy and not overworked, you could consider hiring a Temp. Here are 5 reasons why.

1. Scalability

Temporary resources are the best option when you have a fluctuating volume of work. Unless you have a stream of projects running for a number of years, you most likely won’t need the resources beyond the life of the project. Temp accounting professionals can be hired quickly when you need them and you can disband the project team when the work is done. Let’s face it; you don’t want to be carrying additional costs in the business after the projects are delivered. Temps are also a viable option when you need to grow your team but are unable to secure additional headcount approval.

2. Cost

Reporting season usually brings a spike in work for accountants. Companies traditionally bring in resources from large external audit firms to manage the volume of work required but this often comes with a hefty price tag. Hiring a Temp with the right skillset (or multiple Temps if you need them) still removes the workload from your to-do list, at a much lower cost.

3. Fresh ideas

Professional Temps bring a range of diverse talents to their assignments. Each job they undertake provides them with an opportunity to gain best-practice experience from a variety of employers. Bringing Temps into your team provides you with an opportunity to access new skills and ideas – with the added benefit of injecting fresh energy. A client of mine once hired a Temp who helped to change their whole budgeting system. They had been using the same templates in Excel for many years. Leveraging his experience from other roles, this Temp updated their formulae and automated their approach. As a result, they were able to see information and analysis that they didn’t know existed at the push of a button.

4. Agility

We live in a constantly changing world and businesses must be responsive in order to stay competitive. A leading retailer, who is a client of ours, was having supply chain issues and the Financial Controller needed to address the matter in a short timeframe. The Temp was able to cost-up and model a number of options that in turn led to a change in their supply chain model. In less than 8 weeks they saw the cost benefits. Had they attempted to complete the project themselves, on top of their day-to-day tasks, I daresay that they would still be working on it today.

5. Continued delivery

A professional Temp will bring specialised skills with them and should hit the ground running. Imagine this scenario. A critical resource has left and you know that finding a replacement may take time. You still have deliverables to meet, internal customers to service and your remaining team members are stretched to capacity. What do you do? A Temp enables the work to continue, leaving you free to recruit the right skills and replacement team members. An added benefit is your new employee won’t feel overwhelmed by the mountain of tasks on their desk when they arrive and your existing team will be happy because they haven’t had to take on additional tasks to keep things going.
